On the eve of the 30th anniversary of our sacred Independence, Ashgabat will host a stage of the international team tennis tournament — the Davis Cup. Thus, Turkmenistan will celebrate the sacred Independence Day with a sports holiday. We are very pleased that one of the international sporting events to be held this year is related to tennis.
In accordance with the document signed by the President of Turkmenistan on further strengthening brotherhood and good-neighborliness between peoples, attracting the younger generation to sports, developing the Olympic movement in the country, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Policy of Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan Tennis Federation together with the International Tennis Federation, were given the authority to hold the stage of the international tournament on tennis — Davis Cup from 6 to 12 September this year in the Tennis Complex of the Olympic village of Ashgabat. Thus, the Olympic Village will once again host an international tennis tournament.
What tournament is the Davis Cup? First of all, let's answer this question! The tournament has a 121-year history. It dates back to 1900. Dwight Davis, who was studying at Harvard University in the United States at the time, co-founded the competition along with three other fellow students. If the first tournament was held only between teams from the USA and Great Britain, then the number of teams participating in the tournament in 2019 reached 133.
Turkmen athletes have been participating in the Davis Cup since 2004. In accordance with the geographical location of our country, our athletes compete in the Asia and Oceania region. In our experience of participating in 16 tournaments, in accordance with the highest result of Turkmen tennis players in 2012, they won the right to compete in the third regional group in 2013. At the moment, they, being again among the winners of the fourth group, are fighting for the top steps of the podium.
The Davis Cup is also called the World Team Championship. In these competitions, more attention is paid to the performances of the national teams than the individual performances of the athletes. Since the 2004 tournament, our athletes have played 72 games. Such athletes as Aleksandr Ernepesov, Georgiy Pochay, Dovran Chagylov, Malikguly Mammetgulyyev are our compatriots who have successfully performed at the stages of the Davis Cup in different years.
Representatives of the Asia — Oceania zone of the fourth group of team competitions will take part in the matches that will be held in the capital's Olympic Village this year. In addition to our national team, men's national teams from Bahrain, Cambodia, Guam, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Tajikistan, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates will take part in the matches.
According to the current rules, 15 countries will compete in three subgroups. The top two teams from each subgroup will compete with the winners of the other subgroups in order to identify the top 3 countries participating in the tournament, which will be eligible to join the third group of the 2022 tournament (Davis Cup is held annually).
We would like to emphasize that as a result of excellent preparation, our team has a good chance of successfully performing in the competition and next year getting into the third group. The national team performed successfully in the 2019 tournament and were very close to reaching the top. Our goal this time is to become the winner of the group that we represent for the first time, and then by 2022 to compete in the third group based on the results of qualifying competitions.
The national team will be headed by candidate for master of sports Mirali Gasanov. Now he trains our athletes. Under the leadership of Mirali, we train such athletes as Gurbanberdi Gurbanberdiyev, Atlymyrat Gurbanov, Meylis Orazmuhammedov, Gurbangeldi Sahedov, Yuriy Rogusskiy, Hadzhymyrat Charyev. The final composition of our team, which will play at the international tournament, will be known a little later.
Our team trains at the venue of the tournament - the tennis complex of the Olympic village. Trainings are held six days a week, twice a day.
It should be noted here that in recent years our country has accumulated a wealth of experience in holding international competitions at various levels. Tennis competitions were also included in the program of the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat in 2017. Ashgabat also hosted the ITF Asia 12 & Under Team Competition Central Asia Qualifying event in 2019.
The international tournament to be held in the capital is a good opportunity for Turkmen tennis players to make a gift for the 30th anniversary of the country's Independence. This is the result of the boundless efforts of the President to develop sports in our country and, as a result of these efforts, the high confidence of international sports organizations to Turkmenistan. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our national leader for thess efforts.
Secretary General of Turkmenistan Tennis Federation.
